Gardener's Notes: Cool weather crop. Sow seeds outdoors in early spring or start indoors 4-5 weeks before the last frost. Transplant when plants are 3-4 inches tall into fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Harvest heads with a sharp knife before buds begin to open. Fertilize monthly to encourage smaller side shoots to develop. Plant a second crop in late summer. In mild climates plant fall through early spring.
