Gardener's Notes: In spring 2-4 weeks before last frost sow seeds in fertile, well-drained soil. Or start seeds indoors 4-5 weeks before last frost. Space seeds 3 inches apart. Thin or transplant seedlings 2 feet apart when plants are a few inches tall. Small thinnings are delicious in salads. Mulch plants to minimize weeds and keep soil moist. In mild climates plant in later summer to fall for a winter crop.
