Gardener's Notes: About 8 weeks before last frost, start seeds indoors. sow 1 in. apart, in a container of seed starting mix, and barely cover. Keep moist but not soggy. Germination takes 2 to 3 weeks. When seedlings are several inches tall, and weather is warm, transplant outdoors 12 in. apart. In hot climates, plant in partial shade.
Sow directly outdoors in fertile, well-drained soil in later fall for germination the following spring or sow in spring as soon as soil can be worked. Water during extended hot, dry weather. Often self-seeds for additional plants.
