Start Seeds Outdoors
At midsummer, or early fall in mild climates, sow seeds in a sunny garden bed 1/4 in. deep and 1 in. apart in rows 12 in. apart. Gradually thin seedlings to 12 in. apart to allow heads room to mature. If it is still over 80F (27C) at sowing time, sow seeds in containers in a spot out of direst sun, but with bright light all day. Tend carefully and keep evenly moist. When seedlings are a few inches tall with several sets of leaves, transplant into the garden 12 in. apart.Growing Notes
Savor earliest thinnings in sandwiches and salads. Weed, water and thin carefully and feed monthly for best quality salads. Cool weather will bring vigorous growth. These tasty salad greens require constant moisture for good summer growth. Frisee's flavor sweetens and mellows in cold weather and plants will tolerate light frosts. Watch and protect from slugs and snails.Harvest and Use
Pick entire rosettes to enjoy the frothy leaves in any green salad with either a simple vinaigrette made with fresh lemon juice of balsamic vinegar and good olive oil or with a rich, creamy dressing. Try Frisee tossed with cooked chicken or cubed cheese and olives for for delicious whole meal salads. Or toss with toasted nuts and cubed crisp apples or pears for a stellar combination of flavors. All orders over $150 before taxes receive free shipping!
