The vibrant flowering plants of the genus Hibiscus bring big, bold blooms and tropical appeal to the garden, yet some varieties are impressively hardy for Canadian conditions. Hardy types such as Hibiscus moscheutos (also called rose-mallow) produce dinner-plate-sized blooms in late summer, tolerate winter temperatures down to –30 °C, and thrive in full sun with rich, moist yet well-drained soil. Tropical hibiscus (such as Hibiscus rosa-sinensis) are better suited to containers in cooler regions and must be protected or brought indoors for winter.
