Asparagus Officinalis

Equinox asparagus is a hybrid variety of asparagus that was developed by the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada. It is a relatively new variety that was introduced in the early 2000s and has since become popular among growers in Ontario. Equinox asparagus is known for its high yield and quality, including long spears and a tight tip. It is also winter-durable, which means it can withstand harsh winter conditions. Equinox asparagus is a part of the all-male hybrid asparagus family, which means it does not waste energy making seeds. The variety is best suited for cool or temperate growing regions and has exceptionally uniform spears.

  • 3 Pack
  • Early‑to‑mid‑season hybrid with long, uniform spears
  • Excellent cold‑hardiness and long‑term productivity
  • Ideal for establishing a durable and high‑yielding asparagus bed

Planting Instructions

Amend heavy soil with compost and till for better aeration, as asparagus need well-draining soil. Prepare trenches 15 cm (6”) deep, 10 cm (4”) wide and 90 cm (36”) apart. Plant crowns 40 cm (15”) apart in the trench, and cover with 5 cm (2”) of soil. Don’t fill in the entire furrow at once. Water thoroughly. Fill in the furrows with soil as new shoots gradually grow until the furrow is completely filled to ground level.

Water frequently and deeply. Asparagus beds come into full production after 3 years. It is best not to harvest until the second year. In the second year, harvest lightly for 2-3 weeks. In the third and following seasons, harvest 6-8 weeks each spring. To harvest stalks, run a knife just below the ground level, above the crown. Stop harvest cuttings in June. Asparagus grows to approximately 90 cm (36”) in height, by 60 cm (24”) in a spread. Store asparagus by wrapping the stem ends in damp paper towels or refrigerate stalks, tips up in a cup of shallow water.

    Customer Feedback:

Nice big roots, a bit dry and had needed to snip out some dead bits, but nothing overly much. Soaked them overnight prior to planting and in a few weeks they were up and running. I've been growing 'Millennium' for decades, it's an excellent all male variety, both 'Eclipse' and 'Equinox' are improvements on it, especially the latter with spears that remain tight even when a few feet tall!
