Despite Allium “Nigrum” meaning “black garlic” in Latin, this variety of flowering onion features creamy-white clusters of delicate florets with green centres. These blooms grow to be 5-6” wide and float 28” above the ground like small clouds of flowers! To be planted in the fall (Sept-Dec), “Nigrum” will bloom in late spring (May - June). A perennial, “Nigrum” naturalizes very easily so you can enjoy its return to your garden year after year! Plant the bulbs at a depth of 6” while spacing each bulb approximately 12” apart. Grows best in full sun and in well-draining soil, and is suitable for hardiness zones 3 to 9. Attracts plenty of butterflies, bees, and other pollinators, but resists deer. Make sure your pets avoid it though as it can be poisonous if eaten. “Nigrum” looks spectacular when planted en masse, spreading to create large drifts of white blossoms.
