Iris × louisiana – Black Gamecock
This dramatic Louisiana iris, also known as Iris ‘Black Gamecock’, produces richly velvety flowers in deep purple to near-black hues with narrow golden-yellow signals that open in late spring to early summer (May–June). Highly vigorous, it rapidly multiplies in moist or shallow water conditions and forms broad, clumping fans of glossy green foliage reaching around 60–90 cm (2–3 ft) tall and wide. Exceptionally hardy in USDA Zones 4–9 (some sources include Zone 10), it's deer- and rabbit-resistant and also beloved by hummingbirds and bees.
