Paeonia suffruticosa - Shimadaijin (Island Minister)

This esteemed Japanese tree peony, aptly called Shimadaijin or Island Minister, is celebrated for its dramatic dark purple-red, semi-double blooms roughly 8 in across, each crowned with a golden center and rendered in a refined, goblet-like shape with gently ruffled, satiny petals. Bred in Shimane, Japan in the early 1950s by Kiyo Ikeuchi, it exudes a light spicy-sweet fragrance and exhibits vigorous, long-lived woody shrub characteristics with finely divided, ornamental foliage that persists after bloom. With early spring flowering and a graceful upright habit, 'Shimadaijin' is a distinguished garden treasure.
