Soya beans elena seed by Mr. Fothergill's. A self pollinating Soya bean especially bred to be grown and harvested in the UK climate. The beans are ready to pick when the leaves fall off and can simply be shelled and used or stored for winter use.
Approx. 10 seeds
Sow indoors for surest results April-May, 2.5 cm deep into individual pots of compost. Water well and place in a warm position. A temperature of 15-20 degree C (60-68 degree F) is ideal. Keep moist. Seedlings usually appear in 7-14 days. Gradually accustom plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out 25 cm apart, during May-June when frosts are over. Allow 45 cm between rows.
Sow outdoors April-June for ease, where they are to crop, 5 cm deep, directly into finely-prepared, well-cultivated, fertile soil, which has already been watered. Delay sowing if soil is cold or waterlogged. Sow two seeds together, 30 cm between each position. Allow 45 cm between rows. Thin to leave stronger plant. Water well until plants are established. For the earliest crops, sow in April and protect with cloches, once planted out, until pods form. The crop is ready once the leaves have fallen off. Pods can remain on the plant until required or shell and store in an airtight container. Beans should be cooked. Harvest: August-November.
Hints and Tips: Beans must be thoroughly cooked before eating. Soak for 12 hours before cooking. Drain, bring to the boil, then simmer for 1-2 hours.
