Chokeberry Aronia - Viking
Aronia, commonly known as black chokeberry, is a resilient fruiting shrub native to Eastern Canada, celebrated for its exceptional nutritional value. Its berries offer a unique blend of astringency and sweetness. While some enjoy them fresh, they truly shine in jellies, preserves, and pies.
In addition to its culinary appeal, Aronia is highly ornamental, adding beauty to any landscape. It is also one of the easiest fruits to grow, with no known disease or pest issues, making it an ideal choice for gardeners seeking both function and aesthetic value.
1 Year Old Plants in 2.5 inch Pots
Planting Instructions
- Sunlight: Choose a location with full sun for best fruit production, though chokeberries can tolerate partial shade.
- Soil: Prefers well-drained, fertile soil but is adaptable to a range of soil types, including sandy or clay soils. Slightly acidic to neutral soil pH (6.0–7.0) is ideal.
Planting Time
- Plant in early spring or fall when the weather is cool, and the soil is moist.
Planting Steps
- Prepare the Soil: Loosen the soil to a depth of 12–18 inches and mix in compost or organic matter to improve drainage and fertility.
- Dig the Hole: Dig a hole twice as wide and as deep as the root ball.
- Plant the Shrub: Place the chokeberry in the hole with the crown (where the roots meet the stem) at ground level. Backfill with soil, gently firming it to remove air pockets.
- Water Thoroughly: Soak the soil around the plant immediately after planting to help it settle.
