Gardener's Notes: Start seeds indoors 6 weeks before last spring frost. Sow 1/4 inch deep and 2 inches apart in seed starting mix. Keep very warm, 8-85 degrees Fahrenheit (27-29 degrees Celsius). When seedlings have several sets of leaves, transplant into individual containers.
When outdoor temperatures are 55 degrees Fahrenheit (13 degrees Celsius), acclimate to outdoors. Plant 18-24 inches apart in fertile soil in full sun. Mulch well and fertilize monthly. Harvest when fully colored up. Hot conditions develop highest heat levels.
