Traditionally grown as a dye plant in Europe, woad produces a brilliant deep blue colour after processing, and only lost popularity when Indigo imports arrived from the Far East. Woad is an architectural and interesting biennial with tall plumes of bright yellow flowers maturing into distinctive and unusual black seedpods.
