Miscanthus sinensis – Purpurascens
A compact and upright cultivar, Purpurascens—often known as Flame Grass or Purple Maiden Grass—features medium green blades that transform into vivid shades of red, orange, and purple in fall. In late summer, magenta-tinted flower panicles rise above the foliage and gradually age to creamy white seedheads that persist through winter. Typically reaching 3–5 ft (approx. 1.2–1.5 m) tall and 2–3 ft (0.6–0.9 m) wide, this grass brings architectural interest to borders, containers, or mass plantings. Hardy in zones 5–9 (zone 4 in some sites), it prefers full sun, moist to well‑drained soil, and tolerates a range of types including clay and sandy soil.
