Osmunda cinnamomea (Cinnamon Fern) - Royal Fern
A stately native fern, Osmunda cinnamomea, commonly known as Cinnamon Fern, is renowned for its lush planting habit and dramatic fertile fronds. Clumping into upright, vase-shaped mounds of lance-like sterile fronds, it typically reaches 2–4 ft (60–120 cm) tall and wide, though in consistently wet soils may reach up to 6 ft (180 cm). In spring, the distinctive cinnamon-brown fertile fronds emerge from the center like candle-like spikes before fading into winter, creating a striking contrast with the sterile foliage. A moisture-loving and shade-tolerant species, it thrives in part to full shade with rich, humus-filled soils—especially near streams, wetlands, or rain gardens. Highly durable, deer- and rabbit-resistant, low-maintenance, and adaptable to a range of moisture and even clay soils, this fern is perfect for woodland landscapes and naturalized plantings.
