What you need to know to Plant & Grow

For best growth and a successful Hollywood production, plant in a sunny, wind-sheltered site with well-drained soil and a pH of 5.5 to 6.5. Sow seeds only after all danger of frost is past and the soil has warmed to at least 18°C. Isolate popcorn from sweet corn varieties by at least 100 m to prevent cross-pollination.

The Premiere: To ensure proper pollination, plant at least 3 to 4 rows. Sow seeds in rows 10-15 cm apart, then thin to 30 cm apart. Rows should be spaced 90 cm apart. Germination occurs in approximately 10 days.

The Production: Work a good vegetable fertilizer into the soil at planting. Keep weeds under control and irrigate frequently throughout the season. Cobs are ready for harvesting when the silks turn dark brown. To check for optimum maturity, gently peel back a section of the husk and press your thumbnail into a kernel. If the liquid is a milky colour, the corn is ready for its big screen debut.
