The lush, carpet-like groundcover known as Sagina subulata (Irish Moss) offers a soft, velvety mat of emerald-green foliage only a few centimetres tall, topped in late spring by tiny white star-shaped flowers. It thrives in Canadian gardens when planted in full sun to part shade and in moist yet well-drained soil, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens, between stepping stones, or as a low-maintenance lawn substitute. Very low-growing (often just 1–2 inches high) and spreading slowly, it tolerates light foot traffic and is deer-resistant, adding texture and calm to garden paths or borders. Explore our Wildwood Express Sagina collection to add a refined, ground-hugging layer of green to your outdoor space.
