Irish Moss - Sagina subulata

Sagina subulata, often called Irish Moss (and sometimes confused with Scotch Moss), is a charming evergreen groundcover that forms a dense, moss-like mat just 1–2 inches tall. Its fine-textured foliage, composed of awl-shaped leaves, creates a soft, emerald-green carpet that’s perfect for rock gardens, paver joints, or miniature lawns. Tiny star-shaped white flowers—held aloft on slender stems—appear in late spring and bloom sporadically through the season, adding delicate interest. This ground-hugging perennial thrives in USDA hardiness zones 4–8 (some sources extend to 9b) and prefers full sun to partial shade with evenly moist, well-drained soils. It tolerates light foot traffic, making it a soft, low-maintenance substitute for traditional lawn grass in small areas. Use sparing fertilization—especially low nitrogen—to preserve its low mound form, as too much fertilizer can cause it to grow tall and loose its compact habit.
