Andropogon gerardii

A majestic native grass, Andropogon gerardii (Big Bluestem) forms tall, upright clumps that tower 120–240 cm (4–8 ft) above a base of blue‑green, flattened foliage—maturing to green and then rich red‑bronze in autumn. In late summer, it bears distinctive three‑branched purplish flower spikes resembling a turkey’s foot, adding architectural interest and winter appeal when left standing. Thriving in full sun and tolerating dry, moist, clay, or sandy soils, it’s highly drought-, deer-, and erosion-resistant, making it ideal for prairie restorations, naturalistic borders, windbreaks, and erosion control. Slow to establish but long-lived, its deep roots support wildlife and pollinators while providing habitat for birds and butterflies.
