Panicum virgatum – Rotstrahlbusch

A standout red-foliaged switchgrass cultivar, ‘Rotstrahlbusch’ features upright, narrow green leaves subtly tinged with burgundy from early summer, deepening to brilliant crimson by autumn. Mid-summer brings airy, burgundy-tinged flower panicles that hover above the foliage, turning tan and persisting as attractive seedheads into winter. With a compact, vertical clump habit reaching about 90–120 cm (3–4 ft) in foliage and up to ~150 cm (5 ft) including blooms, it retains a stiff structure without flopping season‑long, creating architectural presence. Hardy across USDA Zones 4–9 and adaptable to a wide range of soils—including clay, wet sites, and salt-prone areas—it’s low-maintenance, drought-tolerant once established, and deer‑resistant.
