Asarum canadense - Wild Ginger
A charming native woodland perennial, Wild Ginger forms a dense carpet of velvety, heart-shaped leaves just 6–12 cm tall, spreading 30 cm or more via creeping rhizomes. In spring, hidden beneath the foliage, it produces small bell-shaped, reddish-brown flowers that attract early-season flies and beetles. Its evergreen-like groundcover habit suppresses weeds and remains lush into fall, making it ideal for shade gardens and naturalized woodland settings. With minimal care and excellent deer and rabbit resistance, it's a beautiful, wildlife-friendly solution for moist, humus-rich shady spots.
