Actaea simplex - Brunette

A breathtaking shade-loving perennial, ‘Brunette’ captivates with its rich, purple-black, fern-like foliage throughout the growing season. From late summer into early fall, it unfurls gracefully arching wands of fragrant bottlebrush blooms that open from pink buds into creamy-white spikes—creating a dramatic contrast across the garden. Thriving in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil under part shade to full shade, it's slow to establish (taking 2–3 years to reach full size) but rewards with stellar architectural form and scent. Naturally deer- and rabbit-resistant, and beloved by pollinators, this award-winning variety is perfect for woodland, cottage, or container planting—though it does benefit from staking in windy spots.
