Athyrium niponicum – Applecourt

Applecourt is a highly decorative cultivar of Japanese painted fern (Athyrium niponicum var. pictum), valued for its silvery‑grey, crested fronds with dark burgundy midribs that add subtle drama and refined texture to shady landscapes. The fronds arch gracefully in a compact, clumping habit, forming a neat mound that is ideal for woodland gardens or shade borders. This variety thrives in moist, humus‑rich, well‑drained soils and prefers partial to full shade, making it a low‑maintenance focal point beneath shrubs or trees. Applecourt is slow to spread, allowing it to retain controlled form even in mixed plantings.
