Asarum europaeum - European Wild Ginger

A lovely evergreen woodland groundcover, European Wild Ginger features shiny, leathery, heart-shaped leaves just 4–6 in tall, forming a dense mat—spreading slowly by rhizomes over time. In late spring to early summer, small bell‑shaped reddish-purple flowers appear at ground level, often hidden beneath the foliage, attracting flies and contributing to wildlife interest. Adaptable to humus-rich, slightly acidic, moist soils in partial to full shade, it’s exceptionally low‑maintenance and virtually disease‑proof. Its deer-resistant nature and self‑seed potential make it a smart, attractive choice for shady borders, rock gardens, or under trees.
