Gardener's Notes: Corn needs full sun and warm very fertile soil to thrive. Plant seeds in late spring when the soil is warm and night temperatures are above 55 degrees Fahrenheit (13 degrees Celsius). Amend soil well with compost and fertilizer before planting. Sow seeds 6 inches apart. To ensure good wind pollination, plant seeds in 4 shorter rows rather than fewer long rows. When seedlings are well established, be sure to thin to stand 1 foot apart, so they have room to grow and properly mature. Water your actively growing corn plants regularly and fertilize at least once per month. Harvest the well filled out ears when the silks turn brown and feel dry.
