Plum Chum Cherry

A dwarf cross between a plum and a cherry tree. Compact grower with good disease resistance, drought tolerant once established and produces fruit with 2-3 years. Plant 2 or more varieties for great cross-pollination.

Dura - A hardy and versatile “chum” shrub—hybridised between Prunus pumila var. besseyi (western sandcherry) and Prunus salicina (Japanese plum)—the ‘Dura’ cultivar offers cold‑climate growers both edible and ornamental value. It features abundant small red fruit with mauve‑coloured flesh, a naturally dwarf growth habit and excellent hardiness.

Manor - A compact and incredibly cold‑hardy shrub, the Manor Chum cherry‑plum combines the best of plum and sand‑cherry genetics for the Canadian garden. Its fruit features deep purple‑black skin when fully ripe, and rich purplish‑red flesh with a tender texture and sweet‑tart flavour—great for fresh eating, preserves or baking. It begins bearing at a young age and thrives even in harsh zones.

Opata - A highly cold‑hardy, compact fruit shrub, ‘Opata’ is a hybrid between the western sand cherry (Prunus pumila var. besseyi) and Japanese plum (Prunus salicina). It thrives in very cold climates and produces small, aromatic plum‑like fruit with yellowish‑green flesh and red/green skin.

Sapa - A compact, ultra‑cold‑hardy shrub cultivar, Sapa is a hybrid between the western sand‑cherry (Prunus pumila var. besseyi) and the Japanese plum (Prunus salicina). It produces small purplish fruit with mauve‑coloured flesh, noted for their sweet‑tart flavour and early production. Its exceptional hardiness (rated to USDA Zone 2) and early fruiting make it a superb pick for Canadian edible gardens, especially in cooler or exposed regions.
