Probably the most whimsical variety of allium in existence, “Hair” fits its name perfectly! The centre of its 4" wide heads contains reddish-purple “hearts” with greenish-yellow flowers protruding outwards in every direction. This oddball variety is still as fragrant and sun-loving as its fellow allium family members, so include it as a fun contrasting addition to your garden display. Plant in Autumn (Sept-Dec) for late spring (May - June) bloom. In well-draining soil, plant the bulbs at a depth of 6 inches, leaving 4 inches of space between individual bulbs. This perennial grows best in USDA hardiness zone 4 but can also be effectively planted in zones 5-8. Alliums are deer resistant but note that they are toxic if ingested by most pets. Easy-going and requiring little water, allium “Hair” will invoke plenty of curiosity in any garden visitor!
