Astrantia major – Star of Fire

Elegant clumps of dark-green, palmate foliage are topped by smoky, burgundy-red pincushion blooms edged in white—creating a dramatic, starry effect. The flowers, held on wiry purple–red stems, appear in early summer and continue into early fall, offering extended visual interest. This hardy perennial thrives in moist, rich soil with partial shade, making it perfect for woodland borders, streamside plantings, or cutting gardens. It’s low-maintenance, with excellent resistance to deer and rabbits, and blooms beautifully when cut for arrangements.
