Liatris spicata

A striking vertical perennial, Liatris spicata (known as dense blazing star) produces tall, erect spikes densely covered with bottlebrush-like purple-pink flowers that bloom uniquely from the top down over several weeks. Reaching 2–4 ft tall and about 1–2 ft wide, it rises above fine-textured basal foliage (6–12″ long narrow green leaves). A native prairie away from the marsh edge, it thrives in full sun and well‑drained to moderately moist soils, and tolerates heat, humidity, drought, and clay conditions better than most other Liatris species. Extremely low‑maintenance and pollinator‑magnetic, it lures butterflies, bees, hummingbirds, and even winter seed‑eating birds into the garden.
