Ferraria crispa
A striking and unusual bulbous plant, commonly called the StarfishāÆLily, FerrariaāÆcrispa boasts wildly fringed, starāshaped blooms in mottled tones of cream, brown, purple and green that appear in late winter to spring. Native to South Africaās Western and Northern Cape provinces, this fascinating species thrives in dryāsummer, Mediterraneanātype climates. Each flower is richly patterned and often fragrant (though some forms bear a more pungent scent) making it a conversationāpiece in beds or containers.Ā Because it is frostātender, it works best in Canada in sheltered borders with winter protection or as a container plant that can be lifted or moved for overwintering.
