Allium “Atropurpureum” is a hardy perennial with unique maroon - violet coloured florets with blueberry-purple eyes, a wonderful contrast of colours! A native of Hungary and Turkey, “Atropurpureum” has become a popular variety among homeowners and gardeners alike. It naturalizes quite easily, returning to bloom year after year. Can grow to a height of 28 inches, with 2-inch wide flowering heads. Plant these bulbs during the fall (Sept-Dec) in rich, well-draining soil with dry to medium levels of moisture in it. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 6 inches, spacing the bulbs 4 inches apart. Expect the fragrant blooms of this allium to arrive in late spring (May - June), attracting beautiful butterflies to your garden! Consider planting in groups to create spectacular swaths of colour across your garden. A deer-resistant variety, “Atropurpureum” works great in both fresh and dry cut flower arrangements. Allium “Atropurpureum” loves the full sun and grows best in zone 4. Note that alliums are poisonous if eaten by most pets.
