  • Garden Giant!

Also known as an “Ornamental Onion”, these garden giants are among the tallest of the alliums. Such tall flowers make a great impact throughout garden beds, and they work well in cut-flower arrangements too! Giganteums are part of the “bulbous perennial” family, with bulbs measuring roughly 2-3 inches in diameter. At maturity, these plants can reach 4 feet tall with up to 8-inch wide flower clusters as well. When planted in September or October, you can expect lilac, star-shaped clusters to bloom in May-July. These flowers attract plenty of butterflies, but no deer! Place bulbs 8 inches deep and 12 inches apart in well-draining soil; alliums don’t appreciate excess water. They do like their sunlight though, meaning they will thrive best in areas of zones 4-8 where they can receive full sun. Note that Giganteums are toxic for pets to ingest, so be sure to keep yours at a safe distance!

Pruning Tip: Let the foliage mature and die down naturally. Allowing the leaves to nourish the bulbs for future growth and blooms!
