Osmunda regalis - Purpurascens

A purple‑stemmed royal fern, Osmunda regalis ‘Purpurascens unfurls coppery‑purple new fronds that mature to lush green, set atop striking purple‑tinged stipes. By early summer, clusters of cinnamon‑brown, fertile fronds appear, offering dramatic vertical interest. This vigorous deciduous fern reaches 2–4 ft (60–120 cm) tall and wide—up to 6 ft in wet conditions—forming bold, vase-shaped mounds ideal for woodsides, rain gardens, or pond edges. Thriving in moist to wet, humus‑rich soil in part shade to sun (with sufficient moisture), it’s low-maintenance, deer‑ and rabbit‑resistant, and adds multi‑seasonal charm with colorful growth and enduring structure.
