Panicum virgatum – Hot Rod

This vivid North American switchgrass begins with upright clumps of blue‑green foliage that reddens earlier than most cultivars—often by early June—to a deep, rich maroon that intensifies through summer and into fall. In late summer, airy red‑purple panicles rise above the foliage, eventually aging to tan seedheads that persist into winter for enduring visual interest. Compact and well‑structured, ‘Hot Rod’ typically reaches 36–40 inches (~90–100 cm) in height and spread, making it ideal for borders, containers, or screens where its fiery color makes a bold architectural statement. Hardy across USDA Zones 4–9, it thrives in full sun and well‑drained soils, is drought‑tolerant once established, and generally deer‑resistant—an excellent low‑maintenance selection.
