Kirengeshoma – palmata

A striking shade-loving perennial, Kirengeshoma palmata—commonly called Yellow Waxbells—features large sycamore-like maple foliage, forming a bold mound of lush green leaves roughly 60–120 cm (2–4 ft) tall and 75 cm (2–3 ft) wide. In late summer through early fall, it blooms with clusters of buttery-yellow, nodding bell-shaped flowers on slender reddish stems—each flower glistening with a waxy sheen and subtending dramatic seed pods later in the season. It thrives in Zones 5–8 (some list 5–9) in partial to full shade, preferring moist, humus-rich, acid soils; not drought tolerant. Naturally deer-resistant and bee‑ and hummingbird‑friendly, it's excellent in woodland gardens, borders, or moist shaded areas, and works well with hostas and ferns.
