Osmunda regalis - Royal Fern
A majestic, vase-shaped deciduous fern, Osmunda regalis—commonly called Royal Fern or Flowering Fern—features large, broadly divided, bright green fronds rising 2–4 ft (60–120 cm) high (though it can reach 6 ft in optimal wet conditions). In spring, new fronds emerge with a coppery tint, topped by copper-brown fertile spikes that persist into fall, adding dramatic texture and seasonal contrast. Thriving in moist, humus-rich soils—especially along streams, ponds, rain gardens, and wet woodlands—it tolerates part to full shade and even full sun if moisture is constant. Very low-maintenance, deer- and rabbit-resistant, and pest-free, this fern is ideal for naturalistic landscapes that call for structure, texture, and winter silhouette.
