Rudbeckia hirta (Black Eyed Susan)

A classic carefree perennial hardy in USDA zones 5-9. Indian Summer has multiple stems of sturdy big blossoms with golden-yellow rays surrounding dark chocolate centers. Plants bloom hard all season. Butterflies and pollinators love these happy flowers. Great for bouquets.

Light Full sun
Bloom time All season
Plant spacing 12 inches
Planting depth Barely cover
Days to germination 10-15
Plant height 3-4 feet

Gardener's Notes: In spring, 6 weeks before last frost date, sow seeds 1 inch apart in seed starting mix. Cover very lightly, keep warm and moist, and provide strong light source. When well established, transplant seedlings 3 inches apart into individual pots so root systems can develop. When weather is warm and settled, and seedlings are 3-4 inches tall, plant in the garden in well-drained, good soil, 12-18 inches apart. Protect young plants from slugs and snails. Spent flowers will drop seed to self sow readily.
