Monarda fistulosa
Outstanding red to scarlet flowers in June and July abound atop 75 to 90 cm (30-36”) plants. Wonderfully fragrant flowers and foliage are attractive to bees and butterflies and are extremely attractive to hummingbirds. Multi-stemmed plants enjoy full sun to partial shade but beware, too much shade can cause powdery mildew to ravage the plants.
Short-lived perennials (4 – 6 years) benefit from being lifted and divided every 3 years to help perpetuate. Usually blooms the second year after spring transplant.
How to Grow
Start seed 8-10 weeks early indoors before last frost or direct sow outdoors 2-3 weeks before your last frost in the fall. Optimum soil temperatures are 15-21° C. Sow seed 15 cm apart on the soil surface and lightly cover with soil. Thin or space plants to 30 cm apart in the garden. Germination can take 30 days or more. Bergamot prefers full sun.
