Silene coronaria
This antique perennial, also called Rose Campion, is the perfect addition to a butterfly garden. It attracts larger species and is favoured by the Tiger Swallowtail in our west coast gardens. The ground-hugging silver rossette of thick, soft leaves supports tall stems of long-lasting, open-faced fushcia colored flowers by early summer. Loves the sun or part shade, thrives in poor soil with little or no moisture and requires no care once established.
It will self sow if allowed to go to seed. Deadhead once blooming has finished if you do not wish to increase your bed. Never bothered by bunnies or deer. Mostly used as an ornamental, there are traditional medicinal uses as a sedative, anti-inflammatory, and for healing wounds. The seeds are edible. The leaves are rich in saponins for soap making. Not recommended to eat them without thoroughly cooking them.
Direct sow in spring. No need to cover the seed. Overwinters in coastal locations, where it can also be planted in the fall.
