These wine-colored beauties offer great garden performance and produce elongated 10-13 cm (4-5") onions with a rich, mild, and sweet flavor. Their juicy, crispy red flesh is perfect for grilling or adding a pop of color and flavor to any dish. The bulbs can be harvested young to use as a salad onion or left to mature for a more pungent flavour in dishes. Space-saving and adaptable, these onions are a must-have for any garden.
An Intermediate Day variety; bulb size increases with longer days that is best used fresh.
800mg. (Approx. 225-250seeds.)
Seeds can be started indoors 8-10 weeks early and transplanted outside in early spring. Otherwise, direct seed as soon as the soil can be worked in spring.
Planting Depth: 1.3 cm (1/2")
Planting Spacing: 10 cm (4")
Row Spacing: 30 cm (12")
Use thinning and green stems like chives. Grow leeks, too, for their mild flavor.
Preparation Ideas: Also known as scallions, they are used to add color and flavor to a wide array of dishes. Rinse to clean, and trim both ends. Thinly slice the greens and the bulbs and add to potato salads, green salads, omelets, and soups.
