Lupine perennis

Native of Canada

This rare native Ontario prairie plant is loaded with light white striped to light white shaded deep blue flowers from early spring through to mid-summer. Flowers are carried in terminal spikes up to 20 cm (8") long. Each flower is about 2.5 cm (1") in length with a typical pea-like shape. Plants range in height from 20-60 cm (8-24"). Best in full sun but also grows well in part shade. Lupin is fairly tolerant of most soils but prefers drier, sandy sites with lower fertility. Lupin is a legume that fixes nitrogen from the air to the soil. Perennial hardy to Zone 5 and sometimes in Zone 4.

How to Grow

Seed can be started inside or direct sown outdoors in the fall for germination in the following spring. As lupine does not transplant well, when sowing indoors, use plantable fibre pots. In early spring soak seeds for 24 hours in tepid water before sowing in a soil-less starter mix. Keep at 15-20 C (60-70 F) during the 15-20 day germination period. After germination, grow on under lights at 15 C (60 F) before hardening off and transplanting outside after the danger of frost has passed.

Perennial.

Approx. 45 seeds/pkt.
