The 3” wide, dense egg-shaped inflorescence of Allium “Sphaerocephalon” (a.k.a. The “Drumstick Allium”) sits neatly atop this unique variety’s 24” tall stem. The flower heads of this perennial start green in colour and then gradually turn to a deep rose-purple as blossom. These pretty blooms will last for a long time through the spring and remain ornamental into the summer months. Like most allium varieties, “Sphaerocephalon” requires only moderate amounts of watering and prefers full sun, but can tolerate some shade. Plant in the fall (Sept-Dec) for a spring (Apr-May) bloom. Plant the bulbs in fertile, well-draining soil at a depth of 3”, while leaving approximately 3” of space between bulbs. This easy-to-grow variety is resistant to deer, however, note that alliums are poisonous if ingested by pets. Use as a contrast to wider, more delicate alliums in a mixed flower bed.
