Actaea - racemosa

A majestic woodland perennial, Actaea racemosa (Black Cohosh) forms statuesque clumps of glossy, deeply divided foliage topped in midsummer by tall, fuzzy spikes of fragrant white flowers. Reaching 1.2–1.8 m (4–6 ft) in height, it brings vertical drama and long-lasting bloom (up to three weeks) to shady borders or naturalized garden areas. Thriving in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil, and tolerant of part to full shade, it’s low-maintenance once established. Deer- and rabbit-resistant, and a magnet for pollinators including bees and butterflies—and even serving as a larval host for Appalachian Azure butterflies. The plant is toxic if ingested, so it’s safest for gardens without curious pets or children.
