Gardener's Notes:
Cool weather crop. Outdoors: in a sunny, fertile garden bed, sow groups of 2-3 seeds 12" apart in early spring. Thin to 1 strong seedling in each group. Feed frequently. Indoors: 4-5 weeks before the last frost, sow seeds 1" apart and 1/2" deep in containers of seed starting mix. Transplant sturdiest seedlings when plants are 3" tall into fertile, well-drained soil in full sun 12" apart. Harvest central heads with a sharp knife. Fertilize monthly to encourage smaller side shoots. Plant a second crop in late summer.
