Gardener's Notes: Plant outdoors in late spring only after temperatures reach 55 degrees Fahrenheit (13 degrees Celsius). Or start early indoors 3 weeks before last frost, transplanting when seedlings have 4 leaves. Plant in slightly mounded hills 2 feet across and 4 feet apart, sowing 5 to 6 seeds in each hill. Fertilize monthly. Keep evenly moist; reduce water by one third after fruits form. Harvest melons when nearest tendril turns brown, undersides turn yellow, and rinds are dull colored.
