Epimedium × rubrum

A charming shade garden groundcover, Epimedium × rubrum (also known as 'Red Barrenwort' or Bishop’s Hat) features heart-shaped, glossy foliage tinged red in spring and fall. In mid to late spring, airy racemes of delicate blossoms combine creamy-white petals with rosy-red sepals and yellow stamens, floating above the foliage. This deciduous rhizomatous perennial grows to about 30 cm (12″) tall and spreads up to 60 cm (24″), forming a spreading mat ideal for shaded borders, rock gardens, or under trees. Exceptionally low-maintenance, it tolerates drought once established, thrives in part to full shade, and is resistant to both deer and rabbits.
