Phylitis  scolopendrium - Heart's Tongue Fern

Commonly known as Hart’s Tongue Fern, Phyllitis scolopendrium is an elegant evergreen fern prized for its distinctive strap‑shaped fronds that reach glossy lengths of 12–18″ (30–45 cm) and often display gently undulating edges. It thrives in moist, well‑drained, humus‑rich, neutral to slightly alkaline soils, perfectly suited for shaded woodland gardens, rock crevices, or containers both indoors and out. Hardy in zones 5–9 (some sources suggest zones 3–9), it's low-maintenance, deer-resistant, and maintains vibrant green foliage through winter, adding sparkle to shade spaces. A plant that combines refined form with rugged adaptability, it's ideal for mass plantings, naturalized areas, or as a textural focal point in shady spots.
