Houttuynia cordata – Chameleon

Vibrant and visually striking, Houttuynia cordataChameleon’ features heart‑shaped leaves splashed in shades of green, cream, red, pink, and yellow on bright red stems. A modest height of 15–45 cm (6–18 in) is complemented by a rapid, rhizomatous spread of up to 60 cm (24 in) or more—best contained in pots or lined beds. Tiny, inconspicuous greenish-yellow flowers framed by white bracts appear in late spring to early summer but are minimal compared to the foliage show. Thriving in reliably moist to wet soil—from rich garden beds to pond margins—it tolerates full sun to deep shade, though intense sunlight brings out the most vivid leaf coloration. Gardeners should use extreme caution: Chameleon is highly invasive, spreading aggressively through its deep rhizomes and nearly impossible to eradicate from open ground once established.

  • Spectacular multi-colour foliage
  • Tolerates wet or moist soils
  • Highly invasive if uncontained
