Iris versicolor

A striking native perennial, Iris versicolor (also known as Blue Flag Iris or Harlequin Blueflag) offers large violet-blue blooms marked with white and yellow signals that rise above elegant blue-green sword-shaped foliage. Flowering in late spring to early summer (May–June), each slender stem may bear multiple blossoms—ideal for rain gardens, pond edges, or moist borders in full sun to part shade. Growing in consistently wet soil or even shallow standing water (up to ~10 cm), it naturalizes slowly, forming graceful clumps via rhizomes. This hardy species performs best in Zones 3–9, is low-maintenance, deer-resistant, and attracts pollinators such as bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds.
