Matteuccia - struthiopteris

A grand and elegant ostrich fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris forms towering, vase-shaped rosettes of lacy, bright-green “fiddlehead” fronds that unfurl in spring and arch up to 3–6 ft (90–180 cm) tall, often spreading to form lush colonies ideal for woodland settings. This deciduous fern thrives in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soils in part to full shade, and tolerates wet areas like streambanks—a natural choice for rain gardens or shady slopes. Highly adaptable, it endures clay soils, occasional dryness once established, and resists deer and rabbits while providing winter interest with persistent brown fertile fronds. Low-maintenance and vigorous, it also offers edible fiddleheads harvested sustainably in spring.
